Edinburgh organ allocation research group
Every word below is a reason for a liver transplant written into the UK selection policy. Size is a rough guide to how many transplants are done for it in a year; colour is the kind of condition. Hover over or tap a word for what it is, how often it happens and how the current offering scheme treats it — then switch to As the score sees it to watch the words fall into the ten disease groups the Transplant Benefit Score knows, or outside the score altogether.
About the sizes. Approximate transplants a year in the UK. Where the registry publishes a figure for the group an indication belongs to, the group total follows the NHSBT Annual Report on Liver Transplantation 2024/25 (Table 3.4: 674 adult elective first transplants; Table 3.12: 51 adult super-urgent; Table 4.1: 66 paediatric; 901 transplants in all). The registry does not split a group further, so the share given to each indication within a group, and the size of every rare indication, is illustrative. Indications are from NHSBT POL195/21 (sections 1.1, 1.2, 3.2.1, 3.4, 3.5.2, 3.6.1, 3.10 and Appendices A–G); routes from POL196/14 section 4.2.1.
